A Strange Halloween
It was a strange Halloween for me. Halloween tends to be "strange" anyway, but this one was strange in another way. At 5:30, Katie headed off to a friends to meet up with a bunch of kids and go off trick or treating. At 6:30 Connor headed in a different direction to meet up with some friends and go on his way trick or treating. Brendan left the house around 3:00 to help his friend set up their strobe light dance party on our "old street". His plans included sleeping over that night.
Around 7:00, Bob and I took Keera to Grandpa's to trick or treat on his road and our old road-one road away. I said to Bob, "Is this the beginning of our kids not being home for holidays? I think I liked it better when I was exhausted chasing three, who were with me from the moment we left the house to the minute they went to bed."
Keera was so excited in her clown outfit. She said she had fun, which was good because she had told me the day earlier that she would be going trick or treating with her friend from school, Emily. She thinks she is a teenager and can just go out with friends, like her brothers and sister. For Bob and I it was like having an only child for us. I can remember in years past, taking my 3 out with Tracey's 3 and having to literally chase after them from house to house. Katie would always be lagging a little bit behind, in her take-her-time way and Brendan and Jeff would be racing ahead, through yards, and Kelly, Nicki and Connor would fall in the middle, as Tracey and I reminded them to walk on the driveways, say thank you, etc.
It was a little bitter sweet to go from chasing the three to actually walking with Bob and one child, Keera, who everyone in our old neighborhood called Katie because she is the spitting image of her at this age. We actually ran into Katie on the road with per pack of friends-laughing and giggling in the rain-like only teens can do. We also saw Brendan when we went to the house he was at (our friends who lived across the street in our old house). He and his friends love Keera and give her so much attention that she thinks the world is hers.
When Keera had obviously had enough, we went home and waited for the phone calls of "can you pick us up", from Connor and Katie. Connor wanted to be picked up and brought to the party Brendan was at and we actually had to call Katie at 9:30 to tell her we were coming to pick her up. Brendan didn't even come home until Sunday evening. Our older family is growing up and moving in their own directions, while our littlest is just starting out.....
