Girl trouble

I have discovered two things that break a parents heart.....1.  watching your child in physical pain (stitches, hurt knees, bleeding kids, stomach bugs, etc) and 2.  watching your child in total heartache.

I can officially say that I think Brendan is going through total first love heartache.  I knew this a few months ago when he obviously had his heart set on a girl he had dated off and on and who was dating someone else at this point.  He was still friends with her (the infamous still friends thing) and texting, seeing her, but obviously he was not feeling well about it.

At one point he was so grumpy I asked and asked for days about what was up and then finally cornered himand put it just the right way, I guess, so he talked.  He truly loves her he said.  Well, that grumpiness ended within a day or two-seemed relieved to have it off of his chest.  But about a month later, we were back in the same quandry.  Only this time, he was so frustrated about it that when a few other things went wrong, like locking his keys in his truck, he decided to do the irrational thing (like break his truck window to get the, instead of just calling us to come with a spare).

What is it about that first love that makes us sooooo irrational at times?  I suggested he stay away from any and all girls for a week or two and he is driving around with a piece of cardboard in his back sliding window-very small, but enough to remind him to call for help next time.

I think what worries me more is that he hasn't bounced back yet this time.  A parents heartache for their children can never be measured.
