Trials and Tribulations continued....

So....Sunday night they were treated to dinner by Uncle Jim and Aunt Robin, then breakfast by Aunt Robin and off they went to Chicago.....however; Ohio was not done with them yet.  Brendan was driving and the van started to "not accelerate".....thank goodness he sensed something was wrong and was able to pull over to the side of the road; hence, the picture below.  There was a clamp that came loose on the gas line.  They were towed via AAA to a garage in Akron, Ohio.  The tow truck driver told them they shouldn't really leave the garage because it was not a good part of Akron.  They listened (thank goodness).  At first the garage didn't think they would get to look at the van for another day and next thing you know they fixed it for free and off went the "corefourtour", as they call themselves.  They slid on through Indianapolis and then struck an incredible storm as they arrived in Chicago.  Brendan was driving again.  They saw an 18 wheeler tipped over from the wind; apparently these are the same storms that earlier in the day caused wreak and chaos in Nebraska.  The pictures on line are incredible.  Thank goodness they made it safely.  Apparently the Bruins are playing the Blackhawks tonight in Chicago, so hopefully if the Blackhawks win, their van won't be overturned in the street.  I highly expect to see them on the news tomorrow as one of those "tornado chasing vans", since the weather is again going to be very unstable in that part of the country.  What an incredible experience to be a part of...and nail biting from the parents point of view.  We keep texting each other what we know about how they are doing.  Tomorrow night they are off to St. Louis Missouri.  Hopefully the van will hold out (as I realized it is a 1986 van, which makes it 27 years old) and they won't hit any tornadoes....beyond that, they don't have much to worry about because apparently they have common sense and good drivers!  To be continued.......

A call

I went to mass last week to be a Eucharistic Minister.  The lectors did not show up (and there was only one other EM with me), so I offered to read.  I told Father I had been a lector years ago.  So in the back of the church, I practiced real quick before I went up.  I guess when God calls....we answer.....and it was really fun to do it again.  So....if women can do all that in one mass, why is it they can't be deacons or priests?  I guess that is yet to come.

"Barn" is open

Obviously Spring has Sprung....the last two weekends Brendan has had friends sleep over above the garage - the barn.  This weekend Brendan is having friends over from school, above the garage...."Dad, these are big guys who will  help set up the pool table."  A 600+ lb pool table). Katie has plans to have friends  sleep over on Saturday and Bob has planned a pizza party for Connor's basketball team on Saturday, above the garage....I think I should start charging a fee for this place!  It's like having a glorified tree house to hang out in.

The feeling of reading a good book

I just listed a new book in my book section, Handle with Care , by Jodi Picoult. It was a long read, and it took me awhile to get into it, but that was more me than the book. It is very well written and the story is incredible. The reason I am blogging about it - I realized yesterday, as I went through like at least 200 pages, every minute I could pick the book up, that a good book is like a friend....once you get into it, you feel like you are a part of it and you have to know the outcome of what is going to happen to those characters who have grown on you. The power of a good book is amazing-when you can't put it down for anything.....unless your four year old says, "Mommy, I want attention." (Even then, guilt ridden, Irish CAtholic that I am....I thought..."I already gave you attention today in many ways....this is my time." Wow-a good book almost succeeding at overcoming the power of my guilt-amazing.)
