Why am I up at 3 a.m.?

Here I sit, after waking up at 3 a.m., so I might as well blog.....you ask me why I am up at 3 a.m. - one word - teenagers.

At 3 a.m. I woke up to Bob looking out our bedroom window.  Of course I inquired as to why he was looking out our bedroom window at 3 a.m. and his answer was because Brendan and his three friends, who were sleeping over (above the garage-in the fort) were sitting on the bench in the little grassy, veteran park area, across the street.

We called Brendan on the cell phone (which we provide for him, without fee-may rethink that one now that he is working 30+ hours in the summer) and of course he did not answer.  Why, I ask myself, do I (and I have heard other parents complain about this) provide my child with the technology to be able to reach him and check on him at a moments notice when he does not answer the technology I provide for that....hhmmm.....aggravation two after aggravation one of being up at 3 a.m. because my almost 17 year old son is across the street with his sleepover friends who we are responsible for.  (Speaking of which....why do we call it a sleep over when basically it is a wake over....they do not go to sleep (purposely stay awake) until 5 a.m., then sleep until like 12 p.m.)

Moving on....we open the front door and call Brendan over to talk to him about this. Well, they were bored and hot above the garage...now  keep in mind we have a 3,000 square foot house ac'd house that they are more than welcome to sleep in - they can even take the front of the house, close the door and have a tv and privacy.....but I guess that cramps the independence of the whole "wake over", hence not a possibility.  We also do have a pool that they are not using, but (not knowing they were all coming over), I shocked the pool for the night-not that I want teenagers in the pool at 3 a.m. unattended, just in case something were to happen.

So Brendan agrees to come back  on the property with the other kids, but of course they decide to continue to rough it above the garage....probably sweating their boxers right off, so to speak.  But this brings us to another dilemma that I am concerned about at 3 a.m.-not the boxers-the fact that above the garage a good number of "signs" have been appearing and being placed on walls and ceiling up there.  Now, as glad as I am that my son and company are not drinking or smoking pot or doing drugs above the garage, I am a bit concerned that they have decided to engage in "removing signs", shall we call it (in other words, stealing) from fast food places and placing them on the walls and ceiling of their fort.  As of tonight, more signs appeared-per Keera (my little spy)-we have put an end to this, since we are probably the only parents who know of this act....even if Brendan isn't with the culprit who drives and grabs the signs, all the time, we can't allow them to be brought here...even if we can't direct kids who are not ours to not take the signs.  We are  told they take them out of dumpsters...as if that makes it okay.

I think the most comical (and probably will send the kids straight to hell for) is the sign which says, "Services will be held at 10:30 a.m".   This of course is side by side with the dunkin donuts sign stating there is now a set of new swirly coolatas.

In other words....many worries are keeping me up at 3 a.m. today but I can take comfort in the fact that  my child is on my property (now) safe and sound...as long as the police do not show up above the garage to check out the sign display.  Maybe it is time to try to go back to sleep, since in like two-three hours the dog will be waking me up for his walk........endless is the life of a mom.......
