Proud of the next generation of women

In the first few years of high school Katie surely has proven her self academically.  She works hard and now has a job and works hard at that; however, until recently, I was surprised at her lack of self-advocacy, compared to Connor at least.  Connor would go to his guidance counselor and seek out help to things he wanted, whereas Katie would ask me how to get something fixed.  I would suggest it and she wouldn't want to do it because it involved her advocating for her self.

Well.....I was wrong about that perception, or she changed a little.

The other day we went to pick up her car.  It was only half done (but driveable), so as we were leaving (and I hate dealing with the mechanics....talk about sexist and rude.....the guy at the desk was on the phone with a personal phone call (didn't mean to eaves drop, but how could it be helped) while three other guys stood behind him and Katie and I waited five minutes before any of them asked if we needed to pick up a car-really????)  At any rate...we were leaving and Katie reminded me to make an appointment next week to fix the other issues.  I went back in with her made the appointment and Katie spoke right up and said, "How much will that cost?"  The guy looked right at her and answered her...and then she followed up with, " that is the blower issue, but what about the oil leak."

Her confidence and self-esteem was incredible and she had no fear or doubt in talking with this man about the car issues...just like the week before when she told the other mechanic that she looked up how to find the codes in her car and they were etc....(and she was right by the way).  I was so proud of her and I thought....you go Sheryl Sandberg....as you said....maybe too late for our generation but not for the next generation.

I was just so proud of her and I felt a little inferior that I had doubts about talking to the guy....which comes from life experiences. I remember once I had a clutch issues and Bob took the car in for me.   When we picked the car up, the mechanic said to Bob, right in front of me, "It's the nut behind the wheel."  He didn't really mean anything by it, but comments like that all along the way will make someone a bit shy in being assertive with male mechanics.

You go girl!!!
